Today was our first day at NUS and we met up with Professor Dan Wei, who gave us a lecture on coastal habitats and corals, as well as an overview of tomorrow’s program. Our group kept up well enough and tried our best to ask questions, but I felt that the real understanding will only come once we experience the work ourselves. The others mentioned that since they had studied about the topics back in school or university, the English used was easier to understand. During the lunch break, I was struck by the size and diversity of NUS. We sat together with some facilitators from the same lab. I had fun listening in on their lively conversation/review on various restaurants across Singapore. The crowded canteens and lively atmosphere made me reflect on how small TUMSAT feels in comparison, and motivated me to want to explore bigger waters in the future, so I can meet more types of people and see different perspectives, to become a more well-rounded person. After the lunch break, we met Professor Daisuke. He seemed like a well-travelled, person. The others commented on how all the Japanese people we met throughout this program had heavy Japanese accents, with Prof. Daisuke speaking a heavier “Kansaiben” than Prof. Miyata. I thought that was extremely amusing and wondered why many people from Western Japan tend to gravitate towards Singapore. Afterwards, I met an old friend from Malaysia studying at NUS, who gave us a tour around campus. We saw the study rooms packed with students. We even got a chance to sit in on one of the lectures there, though I don’t think any of us understood anything about the lecture topic. This personal glimpse into student life reinforced my impression of the university’s scale and variety. Although today was mostly about preparation and exploration, it reminded me of the value of engaging actively and seeking out environments that challenge me to grow.
