<9 月 2 日> Prime Aquaculture 研修 ensured every trip to and from Ubin Island made a profit and allowed the passengers to negotiate price and timing. I think this was a smart, efficient, and bold decision by the boat operators to maximise profit, at the cost of inconvenienced passengers. This again brings to notice how the norm in Singapore is to prioritise monetary efficiency. On Ubin Island, we rented mountain bicycles to tour the island. While cycling, my bicycle chain slipped off its track. Mountain bicycles were completely foreign to me, and at the time I felt helpless, but one of my group members quickly stepped in and attempted to fix it with confidence. Observing his familiarity with mountain bicycles made me realise that there are many practical abilities I have yet to learn, and it sparked my curiosity to broaden my knowledge beyond what I know. This moment highlighted the importance of teamwork and of seeing every challenge as an opportunity to learn from each other. While cycling, we also came across a group of wild monkeys out in the open. Another girl and I were intimidated and scared of interacting with these monkeys due to the potential dangers. However, a helpful, experienced local expertly navigated the situation and advised us to keep a safe and respectful distance from the monkeys, but not to be so scared of them either. His actions taught me to be wary of potential dangers when facing new challenges, but not to be overly cautious to a point of inaction. After coming back from Ubin Island, we took a stroll by the beach and observed the differences in the coastal areas between Singapore and Japan. The texture of the sand and species of organisms found on the beach were very different from Japan. From talking with locals fishing at the beach, we also found out that people here fish for catfish and occasionally bring the bigger catches home to eat. Through this Ubin Island trip, I gained more than just memories of nature and exploration. I learned the value of teamwork, the insights that come from comparing environments across countries, and the importance of being open to new skills. Each of these lessons reflects the spirit of cultural and academic exchange encouraged by this program.
